Synthesis, The Central Principle of the New Civilization
by Henry Guy
“The Aquarian Age will be predominantly the age of synthesis and light.”
Externalisation of the Hierarchy, p. 36
Idealism
If we had to put the central principle of the civilization precipitated in the Piscean Age into one word, it most likely would be “idealism.” We saw the rise of the ideal that all human beings deserve a voice and place in their own government. We saw the rise of the ideal of education and the culture of consciousness for all human beings. We saw the rise of the ideal that all human beings deserve a legitimate role in the overall human economy. We saw the rise of the ideal of the right and ability of each human being to find his or her unique values, perspective, and understanding of life, together with the right and ability to manifest his or her own life as they see fit. We saw the rise of the ideal of conscious, willing, sacrificial service to the greater whole. We saw the rise of the ideal of right relations with all other humans, with the lower kingdoms and the earth as a whole, as well as with the spiritual kingdoms.
Of course we as the human race have failed to manifest these ideals universally. Yet certain individuals have lived these ideals, have made them facts on the ground. What is even more important is that these ideals are almost universally held throughout humanity. They constitute a living human vision. This vision and the expectancy it fosters might be the most important contribution of the Piscean civilization.
We now stand in the transition between the Piscean Age and the Aquarian Age, and we realize that this is no “ordinary” transition:
“It will be obvious (if you have considered my words with care) that a great spiritual movement is under way–perhaps the greatest of all time, if we except the great spiritual crisis which brought the fourth kingdom into being, the human kingdom.” Externalisation of the Hierarchy, p. 649
“The plan as at present sensed, and for which the Masters are steadily working, might be defined as follows: It is the production of a subjective synthesis in humanity and of a telepathic interplay which will eventually annihilate time.” A Treatise on White Magic, p. 403.
We are aware of a great spiritual movement drawing us into a subjective synthesis, and we are beginning to wonder how this movement to synthesis might be applied. We want to know the nature of this new civilization we see stretching out into our common future. We want to know because we have dedicated our lives to help establish it, and we could perform our service in that regard that much better the more fully we realize its underlying principles as well as its essential structure.
Synthesis
If we had to put the central principle of the Aquarian Civilization into one word, it would most likely be “synthesis.”
“Life more abundantly...” is the promise of the return of the Christ, yet, do we really know what Life is? Like “quality,” we all know it but have difficulty defining it. In one sense, we are more likely reminded of Life by its absence, yet what would its abundance show us? We have been given the triplicity of Life, Quality, and Appearance. We see life as quality, as expanding, living consciousness. We see life in the movement of energy in, of, and through appearance. How more abundantly could we approach Life through a synthesis of the three? Life as life, Life as consciousness, Life as spirit moving matter, but these three as a synthetic whole, the One Life.
The promise of this synthetic whole beckons us through the layers of distinctions in which we have habituated ourselves through many incarnations of mental polarization. We touch it and live it in our meditative experiences in the Cosmic Ethers, only to realize that it has little substance in the physical etheric. In the physical etheric we find the precipitation of division so strong as to cause the loss of the truth of our humanity in a prison of separation. In the difference of the two experiences, the disciple finds his or her life mission: to find the way to bring the synthetic whole consciously to life in appearance, to turn the ideal into living, radiant, manifestation in the three worlds.
A synthetic whole? How is that different from the whole that is simply the sum of its parts, i.e., unity? The answer lies in what is seeking incarnation: the Divine Pattern or Prototype. The esoteric literature is filled with the triple divine pattern or essence. We see it repeating over and over in Life-Quality-Appearance, Spirit-Consciousness-Matter, Energy-Force-Substance, Shamballa-Hierarchy-Humanity, Monad-Triad-Personality, positive pole-magnetic field-negative pole, and so many others. For millennia humanity concentrated on the form and matter by holding on to involutionary motion, attitudes and values, while for the most part excluding consciousness and purpose. We have worked with the consciousness part of the pattern over the past few ages, such that now we are ready for the first conscious manifestation of the Divine Purpose, Will, and Power. Yet, this aspect of the Divine Pattern can only manifest through the whole, and it is the prototype of this Divine Whole that is seeking incarnation.
Yet another way to see the Divine Prototype is through function. The function of the First Divine Aspect is primarily receptive. If we consider the function of the head center in the human, we see that it primarily receives the purpose of the greater whole of which it is the fractal part. The same is true of Shamballa; it is the organ of reception of the Purpose of the Solar System (as well as the seven solar systems) of which it is a synthetic part. Yet, this First Aspect also reflects the whole pattern in the synthesis of Purpose-Will-Power. In a sense, it is receptive of Purpose of a greater whole, is actively conscious as initiating Will, and is the motivating impulse to creation through its other six centers as Power.
The Third Aspect functions as the organ of manifestation for the First Aspect. Matter responds to the initiations of the First Aspect through the function of the intelligent, active creation of form.
The Second Aspect could be considered the relation between the First and Third Aspects. It is the ability to be conscious of the Purpose, see the vision move into manifestation as the Will, and relay the Power of the Purpose to the Third Aspect for the creation of the forms that will best manifest the Purpose.
Every Aspect is built on the Divine Pattern, triangles within triangles, interrelating through the myriad triple reflections. A receptive core that becomes the point of cause of the creation of its manifestation, the two related by their attraction through a magnetic field of consciousness. We have been told that this is different from union, and that “synthesis” is only the closest English word to something that we do not have an exact word for.
“All I can say is that synthesis IS, whilst unity is achieved and is the reward of action and effort.” Externalisation of the Hierarchy, p. 536
Synthesis IS. Whatever truth, whatever state the word “synthesis” points us to in consciousness, IS. In it, all exists in essential relationship and order. It is not to be accomplished, but recognized.
The New Civilization
The Divine Whole is in incarnation through Humanity, but the consciousness of it expresses in division, in separation, and the resulting misunderstanding and dis-coordination between the various aspects. Of course Purpose-Will-Power manifests as government in the human kingdom. The combined creative organ of humanity is huge, owing to the whole kingdom being the creative organ of the Logos. As far as its function in our civilization, it now manifests as the technological side of science, as economy and as business. Culture stands as the (presently unconscious) relationship between human government and human creation. Culture could be seen as education, religion, healing, all the arts, social institutions, psychology, and research science. This is the part of our civilization having to do with the culture of consciousness in its varied expressions.
Thus the essential framework of the Divine Pattern is present in our civilization. What is not present is a powerful synthesizing energy that would help each of the three aspects (government, culture, and intelligent creativity) find that they are synthetic parts of a greater whole, synthetic parts of each other.
Government under the influence of synthesis might eventually find itself being an organ of inspiration. It might realize its essential receptivity to the purposes of the greater whole of which humanity is a synthetic part. Government might have an organ of consciousness, an organ of envisioning this Divine Purpose that empowers the distribution of inspiration to all of humanity. The immediate purpose will most likely be seen as the culture of human consciousness, since the Plan depends heavily on its progressive development. It is very possible that the need for the present governing function of government will fade as the consciousness of self-governance and cooperative governance is unfolded in each unit of the civilization.
Thus, culture will be seen as the focus of civilization. The purpose of culture will be seen as the organ of the expansion and unfoldment of consciousness. Education, religion, healing, art, and research science will see themselves in a new light from a new intrinsic purpose. Over time it is possible that education will lose its present focus of training for jobs, and refocus to that of facilitating an enlightenment resulting from a deepening relationship with purpose.
The intelligent, creative organ of humanity will begin to focus its role in the creation of the forms needed for the development and expansion of human consciousness. Primarily, this would probably mean those forms that would best serve our needs for material existence, but would rapidly evolve and expand into the forms that would directly support the conscious evolution of consciousness. Providing these forms, evolving and perfecting them would be seen as an integral service to the manifestation of the Divine Purpose. Behind the purpose of the unfoldment of human consciousness lies a much greater purpose of the Logos; eventually humanity as a whole will be involved in the creation of forms that fulfill this Divine Purpose through the lower kingdoms.
The Avatar of Synthesis
The Hierarchy recognized the magnificent opportunity offered by the confluence of the drastic changes brought about through the World War, the rapid development of human consciousness, and the Piscean-Aquarian transfer. Yet it also recognized the entrenched thought patterns of separativeness and selfishness holding humanity in a prison of its own making, a prison reinforced by the Forces of Evil. The Christ and Logos realized that if humanity was to rise to this opportunity, special help would be needed to disassemble our long held illusions of separativeness.
That appeal was answered by (at least) two entities: the Avatar of Synthesis and his yet to be named disciple. These beings are not from this planet or even from this solar system. This Avatar conveys the energy of Synthesis in a way that the Christ is able to distribute it from Shamballa, through the Hierarchy, and into humanity. While the Avatar is not able to incarnate, his disciple is able. Eventually, these two poles could act as the positive and negative poles of a tremendous flow of the energy of synthesis into the field of humanity.
A New Ashram
In the Wesak message of 1946, DK announces his involvement with Master R, the Christ, and the Buddha (as a representative from Shamballa and the Logos) in the formation of a new ashram.
“I have delayed writing my usual Wesak message until this late date because of a certain event in the Hierarchy which was maturing and which necessitated my entire attention. This event was connected with the Wesak Festival and involved among other matters the formation of a new Ashram in which the Wisdom aspect would be of particular importance and not the Love aspect; this Ashram would also be related in a peculiar manner to the Buddha. It had to be formed at this time in order to be the recipient, and then the custodian, of certain ‘endowments’ which the Buddha will bring at the time of the May Full Moon. The endowments concern the will-to-good of the Lord of the World, the Ancient of Days, though they do not concern goodwill as you understand that phrase. This Ashram, when duly formed and established, will enable the Members of the Hierarchy to respond to this aspect of the divine Purpose—the Purpose which as you know lies behind and implements the Plan; this Ashram, related to the Buddha, will be specifically under the close supervision of the Christ, and also of the Lord of Civilisation—at this time the Master R. They are the only two Members of the Hierarchy able to register the divine Purpose (in regard to its immediate objectives) in such a manner that the entire Hierarchy can be informed and can then work unitedly and intelligently at its implementation. More than this I may not tell you about this particular hierarchical move, affecting as it does both Shamballa and the Hierarchy.” Externalisation of the Hierarchy, p. 541
The new ashram is not named, and not a great deal is indicated about it. Yet, given the central role of synthesis in the Aquarian Age, and its strong connection to Divine Purpose, it might be that this new ashram could act as an organ of synthesis that can be used by the Hierarchy as a whole. In expressing the objectives of the Hierarchy having to do with the preparation of humanity for the reappearance of the Christ, DK expressed in 1949:
“To prepare the minds of men so that they may be ready for the influence of the Avatar about Whom the Scriptures speak. He is called the Avatar of Synthesis and His influence will be spread through the work and the activity of the Christ.
It must be remembered that synthesis is an aspect of the first divine characteristic, the Will, or rather, the Will-to-Good. This energy or influence, which the Christ Himself will wield (and for which He has been long preparing Himself), produces cohesion, a drawing together and a tendency to fusion and union. The separateness of humanity, and its selfishness, had reached such vast proportions, and its effects were so completely dominated by the Forces of Evil, that—in response to the massed inchoate demand of humanity—the Hierarchy called for spiritual interposition. The endless selfish propaganda, in speech or in writing, most of it materialistic, nationalistic and basically untrue and wrongly motivated, became such a clamour that it reached to spheres usually impervious to the sounds of earth; the Avatar of Synthesis was called in to aid.
The main objective and the immediate task of the Christ is to bring to an end the separateness which exists between man and man, family and family, community and community, and nation and nation. This is a simple statement, and one that can be understood easily by the most ignorant; it is simple also in that it provides a practical objective and task for the smallest and the most unimportant of the sons of men; all can cooperate if they will. It is nevertheless a task which has required the mobilising of the entire planetary Hierarchy, and the assistance also of a great Being Who would normally work on levels of consciousness higher than those on which Christ and His disciples labour.” Externalisation of the Hierarchy, p. 649-650
This new ashram was initiated near the end of DK’s work with Alice Bailey, and evidently took some time to integrate and begin functioning. The work of another writer of the Wisdom, Lucille Cedercrans, began about that time and continued into the 1980s’. It is said that she created word forms for concepts that Master R was seeking to bring forth. In those works, the Ashram of Synthesis is discussed more extensively, and is said to be the result of bringing the ashrams of the Masters M, DK, and R into a synthetic relationship under direction of the Avatar, the Logos, and the Christ. As with any work of this nature, the reader must use his or her own discrimination as to its validity.
Synthesis is available to any server today, impulsed from the Avatar, involving Shamballa, through the Christ, quite possibly through this new ashram, and into our lives as conscious souls living as and on behalf of humanity. As we learn to better bring synthesis to life in our lives, we become resonant structures of this important energy, resonating synthesis into every action, feeling, and thought. We are humanity becoming conscious of being the One Life. We thus prepare the way for the return of the Christ, and play our part in helping the divine pattern incarnate as the new synthetic civilization.
